What FolkFaro is
FolkFaro is Faro’s international folklore festival, organised by Grupo Folclórico de Faro. Dance groups and musicians arrive from several countries, bringing their own regional costumes, instruments and traditions. The programme starts in the theatre, continues beside the marina and spreads into streets, workshops and community venues.
The organisers describe it as the largest folklore festival in southern Portugal and the only CIOFF®-certified festival of its kind in the Algarve. CIOFF supports folklore festivals and traditional arts internationally. At FolkFaro, the emphasis is on living traditions and cultural exchange rather than a costume display created only for tourists.

FolkFaro Opening Gala at Teatro das Figuras
The opening gala takes place on Sunday 16 August at 21:30 in the Grande Auditório of Teatro das Figuras. It has a fixed venue and start time, with a seated programme that introduces the international groups in Faro’s main performance hall.

Where to stay during FolkFaro
Where you stay should depend on the events you plan to attend. The marina, station and Old Town areas work well for most visitors. You can walk to Passeio da Doca, eat in central Faro and visit the historic centre without additional transport. Teatro das Figuras requires more planning, but only for the opening gala.
Staying near Horta das Figuras may help if the gala is your main reason for visiting, but it is farther from the marina and Old Town. Airport-side accommodation is practical for early flights, not specifically for FolkFaro. Praia de Faro suits a beach-focused stay but requires more transport planning for central performances.
